Snowflake gingerbread cookies - lumihiutalepiparit

Snowflake gingerbread cookies have been such a big trend this Christmas, just had to try some myself…

And I admit - my mind is so focused on spring and summer already (and next Christmas actually…) that it is VERY hard to keep the Christmas spirits going, so one needs to have these projects with the kids at home after working hours - like making some gingerbread cookies.

Pretty pretty, and simple to make even with the regular flower molds :).

2nd Sunday of Advent

Puinen vakka adventtina

Yesterday I visited Rilekki in Puumala (could be my favorite store on earth, in addition to Weranna's, of course ;)) looking for some old ginger bread molds. And found a couple!

I was recommended to get this, as well, for today. Isn't it pretty? Tens of years of old, hand-made in Puumala and still in perfect shape, with a lid. Now it's filled with 1,5 kg seasalt to keep the candles steady.

Happy Advent!

Best places to visit in Finland - Kenkävero

Best places to visit in Finland - Kenkävero

We participated the Kenkävero night event yesterday (in Mikkeli, Finland). It was just beautiful. So beautiful that it made me cry. All put together by wonderful, talented, friendly staff, perfect surroundings and a winter day.

Best places to visit in Finland - Kenkävero

I'll let the photos speak to themselves. If you visit Finland and heading north on road 5, this is a must for lunch, coffee and some feel-good shopping.

Olimme eilen mukana Kenkäveron yötapahtumassa.  Siellä oli kaunista. Niin kaunista, että itketti. Osaava, ihana henkilökunta, täydellinen miljöö ja kaunis talvinen päivä. Annetaan kuvien puhua puolestaan.

Start of the Gluhwein Season - Glögikauden avaus

Gluhwein season - Glögikauden avaus

Have you started your Gluhwein season yet? I have. Last week, actually. A 10-month-break, probably to the date, and it tastes SOOO good again. I was going through the local store to find the specific one and started panicking - where is it?? The most traditional one. I don't know if it is any good, but when you've had it around Christmas time for 15 years the taste kind of grows into you. Well, they had changed the label. I can't really recall what the old one looked like, but I would recognize it as 'IT', if I saw it ;).

Here a few photos of our fireplace, in constant use now, at least with candles inside if feeling lazy. Petra Lunds Lera mug (have you checked out her NEW WEBSITE yet? So so pretty <3) is perfect for Gluhwein. The hand-woven wool blanket is from Kenana Knitters, and the pompom felt carpet from Cottonhut.

Will be posting our family's traditional Gluhwein recipe here at some point, stay tuned :). Extremely healthy, reading the superfood -articles now-a-days.

Gluhwein season - Glögikauden avaus

Joko olet avannut glögikauden? Minä kyllä. Viime viikolla.

Käsinkudottu villapeitto on Kenana Knittersiltä, pompom huopamatto Cottonhutilta.

Kaikki ainekset mainittu superfood -listauksissa.

Apple rings and Antti Karppinen, 2013 IPA winning photographer

Just to clarify - THESE PHOTOS ARE NOT TAKEN BY ANTTI KARPPINEN :)! Some of Antti's work you can see HERE (there's a slight difference ;)).

Apple rings - Omenachipsit

After receiving only a 2 hr Skype training from Antti Karppinen, 2013 International Portrait Award winning photographer, last Thursday, I think I've accomplished best shots I've ever taken. And I want to thank Antti. Seriously, humbly thank him. Take it from me - he really knows his thing! We were planning to organize a workshop in one of the major cities in Europe during the fall, but that just didn't work out. And everyone being so busy, this was now the best alternative we had at hand before my trip to Kenya on Wednesday (Yes, I am going to see where the Kenana owls are actually being made :)))) !!)

Apple rings - omenachipsit

Kikoi banana tree plate

Antti knows I am a visual person, and being that, sometimes forms, textures and colors just jump at you. The exceptions from the rule, they somehow glow. Afterwards you look at the photo taken with your phone or  Ixus, and feel disappointed. With me - almost never I capture the object the way I see it.  I know the camera doesn't take the photos, but perhaps it will help at least a little to have a better one to carry around.

And- you know the feeling when you have a new camera in your hand? Okay, here is the on/off and here I shoot...Antti agreed he will show me 5 things to do with the camera. I can say I have a clue of perhaps 1 so far, after 600 kind of serious shots taken during the past 3 days, but it is a start. I am not allowed to use zoom, which was bit of a challenge when there was 4 walls, a huge pile of wood and all kinds of equipment around, but I thought at least this time the best shots are of the intended objects :).

Antti - one more time, thank you! We continue...

Apple rings - Omenachipsit

And oh - about the apple rings! These are just plain. I took out the core, and cut the apples into 1-2 mm thick slices, and had them in 75 C oven for 8 hours. The scent in the house is delicious, but at least my apples sweat, so wipe the oven from inside every hour or so. If the moist is dripping on top of the apples again, the drying is kinda pointless ;).

Apple crumble and learning to use my Canon EOS 650D

Easy and fast apple crumble - helppo ja nopea omenapaistos

I don't have much of a sweet tooth really (chocolate and SALT licorice don't count), but I do love the combination of sweet and sour. Apple crumble, the very traditional Finnish version with oatmeal on top, is one of my very favorites. There are tons of different kinds of recipes available, but let me share this 15-minute-preparation-time one. If you don't consider the butter and sugar, it is even healthy ;).

Easy and fast apple crumble - helppo ja nopea omenapaistos
Easy and fast apple crumble recipe

5-6 sour apples (try to find local organic ones)
organic cane sugar
ground cinnamon

topping:
2-3 dl oatmeal
0.5 dl brown sugar
0.5 dl organic cane sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar
100 g soft (melted) butter

Turn the oven to 200 C. Cut the clean apples into slices and toss them into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon on top. For the topping, mix all ingredients and spread it evenly on top of the apples. Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes, until the apples are soft and the topping has turned golden brown.  Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. A glass of champagne on the side makes this treat even tastier!

Champagne with apple crumble

After this weekend's projects we still have apples left, even though the kids eat them every day. The kids are growing tired of eating them, let's see if I still need to find ways to use them...

These photos I've taken with my new camera. Nothing I had in mind, but...we have an old well on our yard, it's kind of nice really, but I just couldn't make the photos work. There just seemed to be too much of everything, too many details here and there, and the photos just got too busy, just the way I don't like them ;). So I focused on the close-ups (again). So much easier to take. Another try today.

If you are interested in any of the products used, you find the Kikoi raw silk runner HERE, the vintage wooden tray HERE and the Petra Lunds Lera Inga plate HERE

Autumn flowers - Syyskukkia

***

Crayfish season start - Ravustuskausi alkaa 21.7.2013

Crayfish party - Rapujuhlat

The crayfish season is starting here in Finland, on Sunday to be precise, and I thought to dedicate next week for these lovely friends :). All my 'crayfish stuff' is at home, so need to be creative here at the summer house...let's see if I can manage.

Wrote quite a few posts last summer, as well, on the subject, you can find them here:

http://www.werannas.blogspot.se/2012_07_01_archive.html

Thought to combine some recipes from Purkissa -recipe book, make some crayfish wok and such stuff. PERHAPS even decorate a table. Will do, of course. Got this wonderful log -idea, of course from Pinterest, where else? And now I just need to find someone to split a large driftwood for me.

***

http://www.werannas.blogspot.se/2012_07_01_archive.html

Ajattelin yhdistellä ehkä vähän jotain reseptejä Purkissa -purkituskirjasta, tehdä vähän rapuja muurikalla ja sen semmoista. EHKÄ koristella jonkinmoisen rapuilupöydän. No joo, tottakai.

In a jar - Purkissa!

Purkissa!

Are you a jar/container, person? I am. The whole family is. Actually my husband, who’s family is not a jar family, calls our family THE (ultimate) jar family (this would include my mother, my sister, and me. Grandma used to be quite bad, as well.).

We put everything in jars. Why? Because we don’t want to throw away food. We don’t want the fridge to smell yucky.  And we want the food to taste as good the next days as it did right after it was prepared.

Which is why I thought it was kinda funny that the book, where Weranna's linen textiles (along with some other items) were used as back ground material, is called ‘In a Jar!’ – ‘Purkissa!’

Purkissa!
I LOVE THIS BOOK by Teresa Välimäki and Johanna Lindholm, who are the two talented, beautiful ladies behind Helsinki Food Company. The instructions are simple and short, and the recipes look like something I could actually manage (at least some of them ;)). AND – the photos are just fantastic. Laura Riihelä is an artist with her camera.

Purkissa!

We should be getting the book for sale in our webshop still this week, and I will be sharing one of the recipes with you here in the blog – prepared it all by myself, and succeeded! Think about that ;)! It isn’t every year I succeed with something new from a cook book, you know.

Purkissa!

***

Oletko sinä purkki-ihminen? Mä olen. Oikeastaan koko perhe on.

Me katsokaas laitetaan kaikki purkkeihin ja purnukoihin.

Snacks in DIY pots - Naposteltavaa kukkaruukuista

Snacks for midsummer in DIY pots - Juhannusnaposteltavaa kukkaruukuissa

Where shall we start? Perhaps we sit down on the dock, admire the calm lake, and enjoy some bubbles? Do you smell the sauna warming up?

Remember those DIY seedling pots I painted white a few weeks back? Well, a few ones are still empty, and I just got some beautiful, beautiful muffin cups into the store (You find them HERE). And I thought they really make nice bowls for some snacks on the dock.

Snacks for midsummer in DIY pots - Juhannusnaposteltavaa kukkaruukuissa

I’ve always been really bad with chips and stuff.  Perhaps when you are not offered them in your childhood, you kind of don’t ‘learn’ to eat them.

But during the years in Turkey  - they have a wonderful habit of offering dried fruit and nuts and almonds at every occasion. When you visit a Turkish home, they have them casually placed here and there. I love the habit! And – they are fresh, always. When you’ve tried fresh almonds, walnuts and sun-dried apricots, for example, instead of the usual stuff you buy in super markets up here, you…well, get spoiled.

Here the DIY pots are filled with fair trade dark chocolate, organic hazel nuts and organic almonds (10 each day, they say, right?). Pretty (and tasty, I promise, done with all of it already ;)), isn’t it?
